Jonaki Bose, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, jonaki.bose@bts.gov

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) study determined that M.Davis and Company, Inc., the prime contractor, effectively managed, developed and implemented training and operational protocols for its call center and that of its sub-contractor to mitigate any house call center effects. House call center effects, if present, may contribute to bias in survey estimates and/or to total survey error.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENT USAGE

  • "Increasing Trends in Elderly Persons’ Use of Nonvitamin, Nonmineral Dietary Supplements and Concurrent Use of Medications"
This article explains a study on dietary supplement use along with medication in aging consumers. It specifies the nonvitamin, nonmineral supplements that have increased in demand by the elderly. The growing use of dietary supplements in addition to prescribed and over-the-counter medications proposes a risk of adverse drug interactions for the uninformed consumer. For more information on this article, please see Science Direct.

  • "Patterns of Dietary Supplement Usage in Demographically Diverse Older People"
This study includes almost 500 participants aged 65-101 years. The usage of dietary supplements within this group is also enumerated according to age, gender and education. Findings show that the high usage of supplements can also indicate a high interest in other preventative and alternative health practices.

INTERNET GROWTH

"Most Internet Growth Driven by Older Age Groups"
Most suspect that the younger people in society are responsible for steady internet growth. Surprisingly, this article supports that those in their silver and golden years can take some credit. For more information on this article, please go to:

LIFE'S CORNER

As we know, the holiday season not only is a time of family gatherings, gifts and special events but a time when some of us make bold and ambitious resolutions. Please take note, if you make a resolution to start or increase your exercise please keep in mind the tale of the tortoise and the hare. Consistent exercise will most benefit your body.

A study referenced on the website www.lammd.com (“Secret 3 – Cardiovascular Training Exercises”) referenced a study of 17,000 male alumni of Harvard University between the ages of 35 and 74. Results showed that as the physical activities of the men increased, their death rate decreased. Men who spend at least 2,000 kilocalories per week doing moderate exercises such as tennis, swimming, jogging or brisk walking lowered their overall death rate by 25-33% and decreased their risk of coronary artery disease by an astounding 41% when compared to the more inactive fellow alumni.

The interesting fact not previously known is that going over 3,500 kilocalories actually makes things worse, with a slight increase in death rate. The lesson to be learned is that moderate exercise is the key to longevity while extreme and over-exercise can lead to increased oxidation and tissue damage.
